As most of you know, I am part of the Chicken Soup for the Soul network. So, I get to pick and review any of the new books that come out. I am sure that almost everyone knows about the Chicken Soup for the Soul books. However, for those that don’t, Chicken Soup for the Soul books are collections of short stories sent in by real people about their own lives and experiences, or sometimes about the lives and experiences of close friends or relatives. These books are always at the top of the best sellers list.

Chicken Soup for the Soul: The Dog Did What?: 101 Amazing Stories of Magical Moments, Miracles, and... Mayhem by Amy Newmark and foreword by Miranda Lambert are full of stories about man's best friends, dogs.

I love dogs.  I have two wonderful rescue dogs, Keko and Gizmo.  I love my dogs and I think they are special.  They are 2 of my kids.  Most people feel this way about their dogs.  Do you have a dog?  Do you consider them part of your family?  As one of your kids?  If so, then you might want to pick up this book.

When I first opened this book, the first chapter I had to check out was "The Dog Did What?"  I had to see if any of the dog stories compared to one about my uncle's former dog, Colleen.  There is one, Everyone's a Decorator, that is a milder version from the one I have.  In this story, by Debbie Kalata, her dog decided to help her out with her redecorating.  Debbie had been saying for years that she wanted to put new flooring in her kitchen but she just never got around to it.  I guess her dog decided to help her get started.  While Debbie was at work, her dog pulled up all of her linoleum in the kitchen.  So, Debbie finally got her new tile flooring that she had been wanting.

My uncle's dog, Colleen, had helped my uncle redecorate his house, too.  However, his wasn't as helpful.  My uncle left Colleen in the garage while he was work.  He had an attic access in the garage, which was a permanent ladder, not the fold down kind.  Well, Colleen, an Irish setter, climbed the ladder and got into the attic.  After that, from what we can figure out, she fell through the ceiling.  Then she proceeded to pull all of the drapes and blinds down,  dug a hole in the couch, tore all of the pillows apart, and made an overall mess.  Needless to say, he wasn't too happy.  About a week or 2 later, he had left her in the fenced yard.  When he came home she was missing.  There was no way for her to get over the fence or under it.  She had been dognapped.  I guess she made a mess or something because whoever stole her put her back in the fence one day the next week when no one was home.  Colleen was something else.

Don't worry though, there are some heartwarming stories in this book, too.  There are stories for everyone.  I'm sure you will find something to like.

I love this story and so many others in this book.  It is a great book that you will love.  I'm sure you will end up sharing the stories in this book with your friends and family.  There are so many good stories that you will have a hard time finding a favorite.  Here are the chapters you can choose from:

  1. Who Me?
  2. Learning to Love the Dog
  3. Who Rescued Who?
  4. That Little Rascal
  5. Four-Legged Therapists
  6. What I Learned from the Dog
  7. Who's in Charge Here?
  8. Meant to Be
  9. There's No Place Like Home
  10. Bad Dog

One of the things people, especially children, like about Chicken Soup for the Soul books is that you do not have to read this from cover to cover. You can skip around from story to story reading the ones that pique your interest. This makes it the perfect book for those that are not big readers.

I highly recommend this book, Chicken Soup for the Soul: The Dog Did What?: 101 Amazing Stories of Magical Moments, Miracles, and... Mayhem. This book, like all Chicken Soup for the Soul books make great gifts, especially for those hard to buy for people.
