Lee Jackson Brings Heat To The Cold War.

His code-name is Atcho. He leads guerrilla fighters through the US-supported insurgency that rages at the Bay of Pigs in the early days of Fidel Castro’s Cuba. Captured and cast into the island’s worst dungeons, Atcho learns that a phantom-like officer of the Soviet KGB shadows him. Inexplicably released from incarceration and still dedicated to his country, he battles through the bowels of the Kremlin in Moscow, into the granite halls at West Point, and finally to highest levels in Washington, DC. Atcho’s rise opens doors into US National Defense even as the seemingly omniscient KGB officer holds unflinching sway over his actions. His public life clashes with secrets that only he and his tormentor share, isolating him in a world of intrigue among people whom he is determined not to betray – and then he finds that he is the trigger that could spark thermonuclear war.

Review:

This usually isn't the type of book that I read.  However, I really wanted to read this one, because my Godmother was a Cuban refugee.  I was hoping that this would give me a little more insight into what her life was like, and what her family went through.  I was not disappointed.  I'm not sure how historically accurate it is, but I'm sure quite a bit of the atmosphere is accurate.

For a person who does not typically like political, military, or war books, I was completely surprised.  I loved this book, and could not put the book down.  In fact, I am anxiously awaiting the next book.  It is an intense book that will have your empathy on overdrive for Atcho and his family.  The dilemmas that Atcho is faced with are difficult to say the least.  What is amazing is that I'm sure people were (and maybe still are) faced with some of these same dilemmas.

I spoke with my mom after reading this book to see what she knew about Mirenchu's (my Godmother) experiences.  She told me how Mirenchu was sent to America before the others in her family when she was a preteen/teen.  From what she understands they lost everything and basically made it here with just the clothes on their backs.  It sounds like they went through some of the same things that Atcho and others in this book went through.

I highly recommend this book, and can't wait to see what comes next.  I give this book 5 stars.  I think everyone can learn something from this book, and that everyone will enjoy this book.  Even if this isn't your usual genre, give it a try.  I think you will find it amazing, just like I did.  It is not at all what I thought it would be like,  It was 200% better than what I thought it would be.  Lee Jackson did an amazing job, and I look forward to reading more of his books.
