Life in prison is a shock. She discovers that people aren’t always what they seem, love wears many faces, and friendship can make life worth living.

But as she struggles to survive on the inside, Kristen must face something even more frightening than her fellow inmates. . . herself.

On the Inside is based on true events, written from the authors own family tragedy.

Review:

Here is another book that surprised me.  I mean really who would think that a book about a women's prison and the women who are incarcerated and work there would be such a page turner.  I was hooked from the beginning, and could not put the book down.  It is amazing how much empathy I developed for these women.  When you think of people in prison, you usually think of them as hard, cold people, well, not necessarily in a women's prison.  They are in prison for doing something wrong but not all of them for violent crimes.  After reading this book, my outlook has changed completely.  Yes, they did something wrong but that doesn't mean that they aren't worthy of love and sympathy.  They are just like anyone else except that they made a bad decision.

The author, Kim Cano, does a wonderful job of interweaving the stories of the women that work at the prison and the women that are incarcerated.  You will understand and empathize with all of these women and the tragedies that they face and/or face.  All of the women have their own hardships and ways of dealing with them.  Just like anyone else, they have hopes for the future and families that they have to deal with.  Some of the families are loving and supportive, and some of the families aren't to say the least.

I give this book 5 stars. This is a must read.  I hate to say this because it kind of makes me sound callous but this book humanizes prisoners.  I'm not saying that I did feel like they were human but I never saw them in this light before.  They have some of the same problems that everyone else does, and they definitely have the same feelings that everyone else does.  I think anyone and everyone would benefit from reading this book.  Parents may want to read this one before letting their older children read this.  There is a little bit of violence and adult situation.
